The machine tool industry is using magnetic measurement solutions for many applications. Positioning of stages, motion control of linear or rotary drives, spindle control to name a few. The harsh environment of machine tools is well suited for magnetic measurement. Applications include wood processing and sheet metal working machines, but also turning, milling and grinding machines.
Customer case
Together with a major German electronics company, HSMAG has developed a complete series of magnetic generators for the rotation speed measurement of motor spindles in machines tools for the area of high speed material processing.
The goal was to avoid the disadvantages of the currently utilised passive system of the gearwheel solution with respect to the noise emissions and heat build-up as well as the occurrence of phase errors through eddy current by introducing an active magnetic rotary sensor. At the same time, the engine speed strength was not to be influenced and the precision of the rotation speed measurement was to be further improved.
The high customer demands for the separation precision of up to 10 arc seconds was made possible through a new procedure of magnetic error compensation. This mechanical solution was made possible through a high-precision steel wheel upon which a magnetized layer is vulcanized. This allows for the desired rotation of up to 60000 U/min. The material, which has already been tested in the automobile industry, is optimal for harsh environmental conditions in machine tools such as oil and lubricants, as well as temperatures up to 150°C.

Rotary scales
Using a flexible manufacturing process HSMAG offers scales for arbitrary lengths with different pole lengths. HSMAG uses different accuracy classes for rotary scales
G006 +/- 6 arc seconds maximum deviation of a pole boundary of the ideal position
G010 +/- 10 arc seconds maximum deviation of a pole boundary of the ideal position
G060 +/- 60 arc seconds maximum deviation of a pole boundary of the ideal position
G100 +/- 100 arc seconds maximum deviation of a pole boundary of the ideal position

HSMAG produces rotary magnetic scales with one or more tracks. A reference point or index can be written in the second track, which is used as the zero point for the control.
